“…she was ashamed to ask for help.”

Several months ago, I got a call from a woman who said she was ashamed to ask for help with her iPhone. She actually used the word “ashamed.” She had been to classes and stores where the customer service reps had spoken so quickly that she was afraid to ask again. She is a smart, educated woman in her mid 70s and yet I could hear that little bit of fear in her voice.

We started working together. I went over to her house, we sat at her kitchen counter, and did one thing at a time. She was nervous. Her voice was shaky at times. Her finger hesitated over every icon. I assured her even if she tapped the wrong icon, nothing bad would happen.

After about a month, she was making phone calls and retrieving voicemails. After two months, she was texting. At the 3-month mark, she was adding new contacts and taking photos.

Four months into our lessons, I went on vacation. Unbeknownst to me, she’d had an iPad in her closet for three years. She had become so confident with her iPhone, that she took the iPad out of the box and started working on it by herself. By the time I came back, she had a photo of her cat as her iPad wallpaper.

We’ve since moved on to her laptop and there’s no stopping her now.
